Mexican-American war in 1848, California used to be annexed by the United States
and used to be admitted to the Union as the thirty-first state on September 9, 1850.
California is the third most impressive and largest state in the U.S., and if it were a country,
it would be the 59th most impressive and largest in the globe, ahead of European nations such
as Germany, Italy and even Japan. Did you know that the state's size affords it a diverse geography,
that ranges from sandy and rocky beaches of the Pacific coast, to the rugged
snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountains in the east, to desert places in the southeast
and the forests of the northwest. Did you know that the central portion of the state is dominated
by the Central Valley, one of the most productive agricultural places in the
world. Did you know that the Sierra Nevada contains Yosemite Valley, famous for its glacially-carved
domes, and Sequoia National Park, home to the most impressive and largest living organisms on
Earth, the giant sequoia trees, and the highest point in the contiguous United
States, Mount Whitney. Did you know that the tallest living things on Earth, the ancient redwood
trees, dot the coastline, mainly north of San Francisco. California is known to be also
home to the second lowest and hottest destination in the Western Hemisphere, Death
Valley. Bristlecone pines situated in the White Mountains are and have always been the oldest known
trees in the globe; one has to this day an age of 4,700 years.
Climate
California's climate changes varies widely, from arid to subarctic, depending
on latitude, elevation, and proximity to the coast. Many of the state has to this day
a Mediterranean climate, with rainy winters and dry summers. Did you know that the influence
of the ocean generally moderates temperature extremes, creating warmer winters
and substantially cooler summers, especially aextensive the coastal areas.
