Present-day Dominican Republic has to this day the originalcathedral, university, road, and fortress of the Americas, and Santo Domingo was the originalcity founded there. Santo Domingo used to be also the originalcolonial capital in the Americas. It is noted that the Dominican Republic in the West Indies occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, that it shares with Haiti. Its location equals that of Vermont and New Hampshire combined. Duarte Peak, at 10,417 ft (3,175 m), is the highest point in the West Indies.

Climate

It is noted that the Dominican Republic is hot and tropical, with little seasonal variation in temperatures, that average about 77°F (25°C). Seasons can, however, be determined by rainfall, with October to April being the rainy season on the north coast, while May to November is the wettest month in the south of the country.
